Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a writing class?

It is not a writing class, although you will be learning and participating in various writing activities.  You will learn journaling techniques that you can use in your own journaling practice.

Do I need to be an experienced writer to take this class?

Not at all! I believe we are all writers and this program focuses on writing for your own growth and well-being, and allows you to express yourself openly and honestly, without evaluating the quality of your writing.

Can this help me if I am already a writer?

Yes! The journaling techniques may add a different dimension to your current writing practice, or give you different ideas to help address writing blocks. In addition, the class gives you the opportunity to share with others in a safe space, which may spark new ideas as well.

Do I need to share my writing?

You are not required to share what you write, although many people have found the sharing aspect of the group to be helpful. Sometimes participants will just share their insights, or their experience with the technique, rather than the actual content of their writing. However you choose to participate is completely up to you.

Why do I need all these different techniques?

Learning different techniques of journal writing can help to expand your creativity and help you look things in a new way. Participants have often discovered a specific theme that keeps coming up, but examining them from different perspectives, or from a new lens can be helpful in gaining new insights. It also keeps you from getting bored with conventional journal writing.

What will I get from taking this class?

You will learn 18 different techniques that will help expand your current reflective writing, or may inspire you to take up a regular journaling practice. You will gain insight into how to work out problems, increase your creativity, and connect with yourself on a deeper level. Learning these techniques in a small group setting allows you to build community with like-minded individuals and connect with others. You may even make build new friendships!

Will I have homework?

That’s up to you! Often participants report that they increased their journal writing over the weeks and use the techniques in their daily routine. But there is no required homework.

Is it safe to share my writing?

We strive to make this class a safe place to share your insights, you’re a-ha moments, or anything else you want to share. One of the rules (and expectations) is that whatever is shared is kept confidential. The class is not recorded, and everyone is asked to respect the privacy of all individuals.

This is not a writing class, so what you write is not critiqued in any way. We are not trying to “get it right” rather, we are focused on writing that helps us to be honest with ourselves, work out struggles or celebrate our accomplishments.

Is this considered therapy?

Not at all. Many people find that journal writing is therapeutic and can help you to work on issues that you are dealing with. However, this is not therapy, and should not be used in that way. If you are currently work with a therapist, we encourage you to let your therapist know you are taking this class.

What materials do I need?

You will need the Journal to the Self workbook, which can be downloaded here for $10. You can print out the workbook, or type in the PDF, whatever you prefer. You can also have extra paper or your journal handy for extra notes.
